Rainfall leads commissioners to remove burn ban

Caldwell County commissioners decided to remove a countywide burn ban that had been active since May 13.

While the most recently recorded Keetch-Byram Drought Index was 515 — 70 points below the drought thresholdCaldwell County received between 1-2 inches of rain Monday night and early Tuesday morning with a moderate chance of rainfall through the end of the week.

Commissioners said they would likely leave the burn ban off for a week and re-evaluate its status when conditions resume deteriorating.

Residents are asked to:

  • Burn only natural brush.
  • Keep a water source nearby.
  • Not leave fires unattended.

New ordinance prohibits jumping from bridges

Commissioners on Tuesday approved a new ordinance that prohibits jumping off bridges.

The new ordinance was approved to curb a pastime that involves jumping off the FM 20 crossing over the San Marcos River. The move was made at the request of the Texas Department of Transportation, which asked the county to approve an ordinance that prohibits bridge jumping so that it can place appropriate signage at TxDOT-maintained bridges.
