January and February traditionally present the greatest chance for severe winter weather in Central Texas. Here are some tips to make sure you're prepared in the event of a winter weather event:
1. Stock Up Early:
Ensure you have essential food, water, and medication supplies to last several days. Don't forget pet supplies!
2. Prepare Your Vehicle:
- Top off fuel and windshield washer fluid.
- Check tire pressure and tread.
- Carry an emergency kit, including blankets, flashlights, batteries, and non-perishable snacks.
3. Stay Informed:
-Monitor weather updates from reliable sources.
-Follow advisories from local authorities and TDEM for real-time information.
4. Home Safety:
- Protect pipes from freezing by insulating them and dripping faucets.
- Have alternative heating methods ready, but use them safely to avoid carbon monoxide risks.
