Commissioners honor Darla Law for 35 years of service

Caldwell County Commissioners presented retiring Tax Assessor/Collector Darla Law with a certificate recognizing her for 35 years of service. Caldwell County Judge Hoppy Haden thanked her for her service, acknowledging that it was a long time to serve the county in such a capacity and laughed that he was pretty sure he would not receive a similar plaque were he to serve that long.

Burn ban to remain off

The burn ban is set to remain off at least another two weeks as ground conditions continue to improve. Emergency Management Chief EMC Hector Rangel said there had been a few fires in the county since the last time commissioners met, but nothing major. With significant chances for severe weather and heavy rainfall over the next week, Rangel urged farmers and other residents who needed to burn natural brush to get it done and to notify the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office if they were planning to burn.

Gary Dickenson reappointed to the Luling Foundation Farm Board

Luling Foundation Farm Board Director Gary Dickenson will continue his service on the board after commissioners voted to reappoint him. Dickenson, who also organizes the Saturday farmer’s market in Lockhart, has served on the board for the past 24 years. “He does an excellent job,” Judge Haden said. “I cannot think of anyone better.”

Other Action

Commissioners also:

    • Approved an interlocal agreement with the City of Niederwald. Under the terms of the renewed agreement, the city will pay the county to use its crews and equipment to work on a small portion of Schuelke Road.
    •  Reviewed and approved the county financial audit for FY 2023.
    • Approved a change order necessary to complete the transition from Motorola radio communications equipment to the LCRA’s Trunked Radio System. The project, which will be paid for through American Rescue Plan Act funding, was originally slated to cost approximately $3.5 million when equipment was to be installed only at a central public safety answering point. The approximately $413,000 in additional costs addresses the need for multiple answering points and will cover the expenses associated with installing equipment at the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, the Lockhart Police Department and the City of Luling Police Department.
